Swaʔwasaʔ Scholarship
Criteria include:
1) Cultural connection and advocacy – a demonstrated commitment to promoting truth, reconciliation, and healing within the community. Engagement in activities that support indigenous culture, language and traditions.
2) Academic achievement – a strong academic record, reflecting dedication to education and future aspirations.
3) Leadership and community involvement – active participation in school or community leadership roles, such as student council, volunteering or organizing cultural events. Advocacy for justice, equity and inclusion, particularly in areas affecting indigenous peoples.
4) Storytelling and communication – Demonstrated strength in storytelling, writing, or other forms of communication that uplift voices, inspire change, or foster understanding.
5) Personal values and character – embodying the values of kindness, humility, resilience, and the spirit of “Auntie” – someone who nurtures, guides, and uplifts others.
6) Future aspirations – A clear vision for how the student intends to use their education to contribute to their community, whether through teaching, leadership, activism, or another field.
7) Letters of support – At least one letter of recommendation from a teacher, Elder, community leader, or mentor attesting to the applicant’s character and contributions
Optional: Students could also submit an essay, video or creative project reflecting how they embody the spirit of the scholarship and how it aligns with their future goals.
